no id? now what?

Most people don’t think about ID because it’s always been there — tucked in a wallet, ready when needed. But for some mothers in crisis, not having ID becomes one of the biggest barriers they face.

Mother lost identification and has an empty wallet

Without ID, a mom can’t:

  • access EIA

  • apply for housing

  • get a bank account

  • pick up prescriptions

  • register her kids for school

  • open a phone plan

  • apply for work

Life simply… stops.

Many women lose their documents during homelessness, unstable relationships, or sudden moves. Others flee violent partners with nothing but their children and the clothes they’re wearing. Some age out of care without being given copies of anything. And for many, years of instability mean paperwork was never a priority — survival was.

Getting ID is not easy.
It costs money.
It requires an address.
It requires documents they may no longer have.
It requires navigating systems that feel overwhelming and discouraging.

When a mom finally receives her ID, you can feel the shift. Suddenly, she’s able to move forward — open accounts, apply for supports, sign rental forms, pick up medication, advocate for her children, and take steps toward independence.

It’s a small card with a big impact.
And for many mothers, it’s the first door that opens toward a new beginning.
